‘Censorship’ App

A new app called Clean Reader has been designed to take profanity out of electronic books – using it would turn ‘Oh my God!’ into ‘Oh my goodness’ and ‘Jesus Christ!’ into ‘Jeez!’ while it treats all forms of genitalia as ‘bottom.’ It was designed by a couple from Idaho who wanted to challenge their fourth grade daughter to read more advanced books but didn’t want her exposed to excess profanity. Some authors have attacked its use calling it censorship, but I think the problem with books aimed at teenagers such as The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner is not swearing but dystopian themes of darkness, death and dysfunctional societies which younger readers would probably find more scary.
